IWC '09 YEAR END
AWARD RESULTS
February 9th, 2010
At long last, its time to
reveal the much-anticipated results of the annual IWC Year End Awards,
ranking the best in IWC in 2009 as selected by you, the loyal IWC fans.
Below you’ll see the official tallies with insight and analysis from the
voice of the International Wrestling Cartel, Joe Dombrowski. Last year,
we broke the news that Jimmy DeMarco had scored the win in four big
categories, breaking the previous record of three held by “The
Phenomenal” AJ Styles. This year, Jimmy DeMarco is topped by the only
man who could possibly top him… that man, of course, being Jimmy DeMarco.
WRESTLER OF THE YEAR

Winner: “DeeeLicious” Jimmy DeMarco - 70%
Runner-Up: Super Hentai - 20%
JD: Although you could make a very strong case for men like Hentai,
Shiima Xion, and Ray Rowe here, really no one has dealt with the perils
and dangers that Jimmy DeMarco has in 2009. From dealing with two
separate men placing bounties on his head, to falling out of favor with
management, to the betrayal by his best friend, and a war with Necro
Butcher that will not soon be forgotten by anyone who witnessed it,
every time Jimmy DeMarco entered the ring, it truly was a war and truly
was a battle for survival. While most would fall short, Jimmy not only
endured it, but beat it to become champion. No one has perhaps ever been
given less and accomplished more.
TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR

Winners: Mickey & Marshall Gambino - 43%
Runners-Up: Irish Airborne - 30%
JD: The dominance over the years by The Family in IWC tag wrestling is
second-to-none, becoming the only twosome to hold five separate IWC Tag
Titles. While Airborne kept a stranglehold on the tag straps all year,
it was clear the fans realized they were the recipient of a few lucky
breaks, and a glowing endorsement from the front office. Love them or
hate them, The Gambinos take pride in fighting and earning what they
get, and if they are beaten by better men, so be it. It’s clear The
Family have left a huge void with their forced departure in December,
but it will be very entertaining to see who steps up to fill that void
in 2010.
MATCH OF THE YEAR

Winner: Jimmy DeMarco vs. Shiima Xion (IWC Title Match) - 67%
Runners-Up - Super Hentai vs. Justin Idol (Super Indy 8
Final) - 10%
Too Cold Scorpio vs. Davey Richards (Super Indy 8 Opening Round) - 10%
Jimmy DeMarco vs. Necro Butcher (N-Con’s Revenge) - 10%
JD: Never in my seven years of broadcasting wrestling have I ever
experienced a match quite like this. The emotion behind it, the personal
animosity that existed, and still very much does, between these two men,
and the pure overwhelming energy throughout the entire building helped
take an already great encounter and catapult it into an instant classic.
Shiima and Jimmy are arguably the two best in the entire region right
now and this match exemplifies why. Despite Shiima’s unbearably selfish
attitude toward his friendship with Jimmy, and Jimmy’s less than
orthodox personality, both should be heralded for a truly unforgettable
effort that both men are likely still feeling the effects of today.
MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT

Winner: Chuck Roberts Announces Self As New Owner; DeMarco Wins IWC
Title - 38%
Runner-Up: Norm Connors Retirement - 28%
JD: As special as the DeMarco/Shiima match was, few moments could have
properly ended such a climactic and intense story. But after four months
of speculation as to the new IWC owner, it ended up being revealed, by
necessity and not by decision, in perhaps the most heated and impactful
way possible. Taking charge of the most important match in IWC history
immediately cementing Chuck Roberts as a force to be taken very
seriously on the administration end of things. Following that, the
emotion and elation from everyone involved transcended description as
Jimmy celebrated with the IWC Title. For how much he has given of
himself to reach that pinnacle, and how truly moving that moment
appeared to be for him, Jimmy deserves a thousand more memorable moments
such as this.
MOST POPULAR

Winner: Jimmy DeMarco - 80%
Runners-Up: Super Hentai - 7%
Delirious - 7%
JD: What can be said? No one has the unique personality, charisma,
unorthodox charm, and unexplainable connection with the IWC fans (I will
not refer to you as a “universe”) quite like Jimmy DeMarco. I can’t
explain it, I doubt if even Jimmy DeMarco could explain it. Call it
magic, call it lightning in a bottle, but whatever you call it, call it
damn entertaining and fun to watch.
MOST HATED

Winner: Shiima Xion - 50%
Runner-Up: J-Rocc - 19%
JD: Shiima Xion showed how easily money, success, and power can corrupt,
manipulate, and destroy. His insatiable desire to be looked at as the
definitive #1 in the area caused his selfish insecurities stemming back
from his modeling days to come pouring back to the surface, and led to
the destruction of a very close yet largely taboo friendship between he
and Jimmy DeMarco over the past few years. What once was a great athlete
celebrated for his international success and unbelievably rapid career
growth, turned into a still-great athlete who was instead criticized for
his shallow, superficial nature. The man who once turned bitter over
being the second most popular athlete in the company, now finds himself
at rock bottom on the list.
FEUD OF THE YEAR

Winner: Shiima Xion vs. Jimmy DeMarco - 60%
Runner-Up: Delirious vs. Sami Callihan - 23%
JD: There isn’t much more to state about the Xion/DeMarco rivalry other
than what we’ve already covered. Both men took the issues at hand so
seriously, so personally, and handled them so emphatically that you
could not help but be enthralled in their struggles. To each, this was
the most important issue and match in their careers, and in turn it
became perhaps their most famous. Meanwhile, Sami Callihan proved how
quickly and easily he can get under someone’s skin, thanks in part to
such unpopular actions as bringing Jon Moxley into IWC as his tag
partner for what was supposed to be a mixed tag match, not to mention
his creepy and unsettling behavior toward Daizee Haze.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Winner: Kato - 28%
Runner-Up: Marion Fontaine - 21%
JD: Kato is a very wily and cerebral competitor, and has quickly grown
to become one of the best young veterans on the IWC roster. While he’s
not the most humble of athletes, and doesn’t have the best success rate
from the second rope, Kato is poised to be a force to be reckoned with
in the months to come. Marion Fontaine, meanwhile, doesn’t have a
bodybuilder physique, but has been able to use his size and shape to his
advantage and formulate a unique style in the ring, and unmatched
pizzazz outside of it. The mustache isn’t too shabby either.
LIVE EVENT
Winner:
Call To Arms: Full Circle -79%
Runner-Up: A New Beginning Woo - 10%
JD: When you think of an event full of emotion, full of diversity, and
full of events and circumstances that changed the course of a company,
and everyone in it, forever you have “Full Circle”. We saw the end of an
era that lasted so many years and saw so many great successes and
triumphs. Norm Connors, Dennis Gregory, The Gambinos all saw their lives
altered forever, and the contributions of the main event go without
saying. In a lot of ways, the events of “Full Circle” were building and
building ever since day one of IWC… yet somehow still lived up to the
hype.
NON-WRESTLER PERSONALITY

Winner: (tie) Chuck Roberts & Norm Connors - 45%
JD: A very fitting result as we see the old guard and the new guard of
IWC management. Norm’s retirement speech was very heartfelt and very
special to be a part of. After years of being a successful businessman
and shrewd promoter, when it was all said and done Norm assured his
proper place in history and will be remembered as such accordingly.
However, the show must go on and Chuck Roberts immediately stepped into
the role in a big way, jump starting a newer and more unpredictable era
in IWC action.
How will Chuck’s popularity rate after his first year on the job? Next
year may tell the story, but until that time all we can do is watch 2010
unfold, watch as new memories are created and more moments become
indelibly etched in the annals of time. Can 2010 top the amazing moments
and stars of 2009? Only time shall tell.
